What is your hospital affiliation?
I currently have admitting privileges at Mills Peninsula Hospital in San Mateo, California. Prior to my affiliation with Mills Peninsula Hospital, I held the position of Associate Medical Director at El Camino Hospital in Mountain View, California.
What do you do at the hospital?
I work closely with the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). My responsibilities include the evaluation and management of medications, treatment planning, and coordination of care, for both adolescents and adults.
What is PHP? What is IOP?
The PHP is designed to meet the needs of patients who have just been discharged from the hospital; it functions as a bridge to outpatient care. It also is used when a patient needs a higher level of care, but not necessarily hospitalization. The program provides tremendous support via individual case management, therapy, skills training, and family work. The team approach for recovery makes this structure particularly relevant and useful. The IOP is a step-down program from the PHP, and it is slightly less structured. It provides a smooth transition to a patient's outpatient care. It is a privilege to assist those who need a higher level of care, and it is very rewarding to see the tremendous improvement that can be made through the programs.
What is the first appointment like?
When you come to my office, your job is to tell me what is happening in your life, how you are feeling, and what things are not working for you. My job is to listen, to observe, and to clarify what you are expressing. Together, we will formulate your therapeutic goals and work out a plan to reach them. The initial appointment typically is 50-55 minutes. Of course, this is not enough time to get me completely caught up with what is going on. However, it does give me a good sense of what you are looking for and how I can help you.
Is there an evaluation period?
Absolutely! You need time and I need time to see if we are a good fit for each other. Typically, this process takes about four appointments. At the end of the evaluation period, we will discuss whether I am the best person to help you work through the issues on your mind.
Will you return my calls?
I check my voice mail daily, and I return all calls within one business day. If you can’t wait for me to call you back, please contact Psychiatric Emergency Services, at 650-573-6226.
Why do you have a 408 number when you work in a 650 area code? Do you have an office else where?
It is a 408 number because you are calling my cell phone directly. I only have one office in Menlo Park. As my office is located in the mid-Peninsula area, it is easily accessible for residents of Mountain View, Los Altos, Palo Alto, Redwood City, San Carlos, San Mateo, Hillsborough, Burlingame, and Millbrae.
Are my records confidential?
As a solo practitioner, only I have access to your medical records. My electronic medical records storage is HIPPA-compliant, and it uses a bank-level data security system.
Are you affiliated with a group?
I am an independent contractor with Christian Counseling Centers, the largest professional Christian counseling agency in Northern California. Through this connection, I am part of the resources available to Christians in the Bay Area.
Are the sessions religious?
It’s entirely up to you. If incorporating your faith into your treatment is important to you, we certainly will do so.
